Single session $75 for 45 minutes
Farm Play is held at The Mindful Canine facility at Melrose Valley Farm. Summer sessions, in the early morning or evening, are available on request. The program offers dogs and their owners a supervised one-on-one session, either for self-directed exercise in the paddock or one-on-one training by the Mindful Canine staff. Training can include herdy balls, nosework, loose lead walking, flatwork herding foundations (sit, down, stop and recall), calm exposure to fenced sheep or other activities of your choice. If your dog has a playmate you can organise shared sessions as an opportunity for off-lead play together, or ask for our help to arrange an appropriate play mate. The session is suitable for all dogs. The rural setting is particularly useful for dogs who react to suburban triggers such as traffic, bikes, other dogs etc. Please note however that this session does not provide behaviour modification training for reactivity.
Venue: The Mindful Canine training facility at Melrose Valley Farm, Old Tuggeranong Road, ACT.
Cost: $240
This class is taught by KPACTP qualified trainer Jess Strain. It is designed specifically for herding breed dogs: border collies, cattle dogs, kelpies and koolies. Your dog will learn to use traditional sheep herding behaviours such as flanking and outruns to control the ball and stop it from "escaping". The game is a lot of fun and gives your dog a mental and physical workout.
The course consists of 6 classes, held weekly. Classes are limited to four participants. Each handler and their dog will have a turn to work one-on-one with Jess for a fifteen minute session per class. Handlers not working can stay to watch the other participants, but dogs will need to be either crated or kept in your car, whatever is most comfortable, until it is their turn. Participants will also have access to a Facebook members group where they can ask follow up questions and post practice session videos for feedback. Summer classes are held at The Mindful Canine training facility at Melrose Valley Farm, Old Tuggeranong Road, ACT. Winter classes may by held at an indoor venue (details provided prior to commencement of the class.)
This course is suitable for herding breed dogs who already show a keen interest in working with balls. Classes fill quickly. To inquire if this course will suit your dog and you wish to be placed on the waiting list for upcoming classes, contact Jess Strain at themindfulcanine@outlook.com .
Cost $240
The 6 week course will focus on specific training and games for herding breeds. This will include:
There will be 1-2 occasions where your dog will need to be comfortable being in a crate or in the car so the whole training area can be used for 1 dog at a time to play the herding game called "Hardy Balls".
There will be a maximum of 4 dogs per class. Classes are held at The Mindful Canine training facility at Melrose Valley Farm, Old Tuggeranong Road, ACT. Please email Jess on themindfulcanine@outlook.com if you wish to be placed on the list for upcoming classes.
Workshop cost $240
This 6 week workshop teaches herding breeds (border collies, kelpies, cattle dogs, koolies and aussie shepherds) the foundation skills needed for sheep herding: the stop, the sit and lie down, recall, waiting at the gate, loose lead walking and tethering. These skills are taught off stock, with an opportunity to work near penned stock and near loose stock while on lead. The course will suit dogs who might go on to learn herding, those who have done some preliminary work with herding but need to hone these particular skills, or dogs who will just enjoy the fun of learning new behaviours. Please note the course does not include actual sheep herding. Where: The Mindful Canine training facility at Melrose Valley Farm, Old Tuggeranong Road, ACT.
When: Thursday 9:30am, starting 16 March
Each zoom session runs for 45 minutes and costs $80.
These sessions, also taught by Jess Strain, are run via zoom as one-on-one coaching with the handler and their dog in live time . Timing for the zoom sessions is flexible and handlers can work at their own pace. As training progress, handlers can upload videos of their practice sessions so that Jess can give specific tips and feedback.
This course will be suitable for herding breed dogs who already show a keen interest in working with balls.
